BOTTOM LINE:
Left Kaiteriteri for a
drive to Westport, New Zealand
BACK STORY:
We woke up this morning
to rain and overcast skies…Thankful for our time in Kaiteriteri, but a good day
to move on. We said our good-byes to
Margaret the manager at the hostel who had taken a liking to us. She hunted us down to check how we were and
say thank you for helping her fold towels.
The departure time was
11:30 and late by normal standards. The
bus arrived about 5pm yesterday and the Kiwi Experience wanted to give the
passengers time to enjoy the town and beach a little before we left.
This was a new bus and
new bus driver for us…and except for three others the group was filled with new
faces. I got to the bus early to get the front seats. I knew that the road was twisty and I didn’t
want to chance car- sickness. We got the
two seats one back from the front, which were fine and actually sat above for a
good view.
Don’t know if I have a
bad case of allergies or I’ve got a little cold. I had a sneezing attack last
night with itchy throat and eyes. It is
continuing this morning. There are many
trees in bloom here and I am certain that the winds are kicking up the pollen.
Our day was primarily
spent in the bus. We stopped at Nelson
Lake for a pit stop and a look at the view.
I can only imagine how beautiful it would have been to see the tops of
the mountains that circle the lake.

Eels in Lake Nelson, Sushi anyone? |
A woman on a dock called out to us to come and see the eels in the water. A group of long black eels were slithering around in the shallows.
Our destination today
was the town of Westport. The area that
we passed through gets most of the rain in New Zealand and has less than 1% of
its population. The driver (Guy) said that
the people in the area live off the land and trade/barter for needs/supplies.
Westport is a port city
on the west coast of NZ. It has about
5,000 people.
When we settled into
our hostel, Bruce and I took a long walk to the water and then along the main
street to find something for dinner.
Most cafes were closed and those that were open mainly had fried food,
which we have totally maxed out on. We
found something at the grocery store and headed back to our home for the night.
