BACK STORY:
Following a 10-hour
night flight to Fiji on Tuesday 11/5/13, we landed at 6 am on Thursday 11/7/13 morning! That’s right, no error. Crossing the
international dateline, we lost a day. Aside from having no overhead lighting
to read by and no screen activity for the movies offered by Fiji Airways, the
flight seemed surprisingly short!
Upon clearing customs, we were greeted with,
“BULA” by the locals who were offering rides to near by resorts. Of the 332 Islands that make up Fiji, 110 are
inhabited and there are as many dialects…all of which use “BULA” as the generic
greeting of “hello.” Even McDonald’s broadcasts it in their drive through. “Binaca” means thank you and gives a whole
new meaning to the breath freshener we know of in the US!
A shuttle took us to
Club Fiji Resort that thankfully had our room ready for early check in. The resort is fairly old and looks as if it
is struggling. Although primitive
(kitchen shelves are lined with old newspapers), the people are lovely and
helpful and our room is clean. A good
breakfast is included and the staff is helpful in sharing info about their
country.
We have a water front
balcony, which captures beautiful sunrises.
As for the water view, it’s more like a muddy beach. The nearby
coastline is litter strewn with trash. Natives are quick to point out that
there was severe damage/destruction from the typhoon in February of 2012. Our resort was actually under 7 feet of
water.
