Drive from Merrimbula to Lakes Entrance, Saturday - Dec. 14, 2013

SATURDAY – DECEMBER 14, 2013

BOTTOM LINE:
Drove from Merrimbula to Lakes Entrance

BACK STORY:
We got away at our typical 9:30am and were on the hunt for somewhere to get breakfast.  Most towns have bakeries, coffee shops and milk bars that offer pastries, beverages and light fairs.  Bruce was feeling like pancakes so in the middle of the street he calls over to an elderly woman to inquire about breakfast eateries.  At first she ignored him but in his kind persistence she took a step towards our car and smiled saying, “you’ll get the best breakfast around at Oakland’s around the bend.” Oakland was our destination and easy to find.  It was a huge barn with Oakland’s painted on the roof.  Turning into the parking lot we realized that it was a beautiful garden nursery, art gallery, gift shop and café. It was the perfect spot for us…casual with large fillet of log tables and happy employees who were eager to assist.  Following breakfast we looked around the plants and gift ware interested in seeing what is sold in the area.  Delightful place…one of our favorites!

Lakes Entrance (yes, the name of a town) was about a five hour ride south and would put us about three hours from Melbourne. The town was aptly named for having the marine entrance to a large salt water lake.

Our hotel was on Carpenter Street, my maiden name!

As with many towns we have driven through this one consisted on one long street for its commercial area with residential arteries branching off of it.  Our hotel was in with homes and a gem to find.  Rather than a hotel room it was more like a small apartment.  It had a full kitchen and a laundry room!  Yippie!  Never thought I’d be excited about doing laundry, so I’ll say that I was very grateful.

In the early evening we took a walk down to the ocean.  This beach had a walkway between the ocean and the inlet.  A sign was posted warning that there were poisonous Tiger snakes known to be in the bush.  That was enough for me and we headed back to town for dinner!
